Hotel California

The Hotel California has been featured in a number of guide books and has been a popular hotel with clients looking for a good value ski break. If you’re after a ski holiday with a twist, this hotel will certainly capture your imagination.

Hotel features:

As the name might suggest, the hotel has been styled around owners Guido and Marina’s love of music and they fully expect their guests to share this with them – each of the 12 bedrooms are named and themed after a different legendary singer or band. From Elvis Presley to Janis Joplin, all the rooms feature unique décor where a carved wooden bed-head in the shape of a Cadillac with indicators as your bedside lights is a taste of what you can expect from the Hotel California.

If you love live music and an energetic atmosphere, the hotel bar comes alive at the weekends where Champoluc’s residents enjoy the bar. It can be much quieter during the week, but you’ll be kept entertained by the cowboy saloon styling and bar games including the pool table and darts. You can also watch music videos and sport on the big screen TV. The hotel is currently operating a karaoke evening every Thursday.

Hotel California Bar

Evening meals (which aren’t included in our prices, but can be booked and paid for locally) are taken on the mezzanine level above the bar, or in one of the numerous local village restaurants. Our resort team are on hand throughout your stay to recommend good local eateries to suit your budget and our on-demand resort minibus service is available 7 evenings a week until midnight to transport you to and from your chosen restaurant. Breakfast (included in your holiday price) is certainly a quieter affair, taken in the lounge downstairs.

Located at the edge of the village, it’s not too far from the slopes or restaurants of Champoluc. An easy 10 minute stroll takes you to our ski deposit (where all your ski equipment, including ski boots, is stored), or you can call the ‘on-demand’ Ski 2 minibus to transport you to the centre of the village.

The position is ok as it’s 10-12 mins walk to the Ski2 office and main lift. About 15 mins walk to Frachey lift. The hotel is tired and living in the past. Most bathrooms have a bath with hand held shower, no curtain or screen. Beds are comfortable and rooms a good size with small seating area. Breakfast is basic continental (but no good fresh bread), evening menu is also very basic. Would not choose to stay here again as there are better places.

Very friendly hotel just outside the village.
Spotlessly clean and rooms with a musical theme.
It was quiet when we were there so we tended to eat out.
The staff are very polite and let us keep a room to change in when we left.
We all want to return next year.

This was our second stay at The California, it was a lot busier this year, as usual the place is lovely and clean, the staff very helpful and the walk into Champoluc through the woods is lovely. We would love to re turn again next year.

The Hotel California is a very quirky hotel indeed! We were in the Janis Joplin room and although a little tired and basic, it was warm and clean and fine for our 4 night stay. We enjoyed the walk through the woods to the ski lift each morning although Ski2 were happy to collect and drop us off if we asked too!

The breakfast is quite basic but we enjoyed it and the coffee was lovely.

The bar was quite quiet whilst we were there, except on Wednesday evening when there was a karaoke which was quite lively – but if you’re looking for quietness then the bar is quite far from the rooms so shouldn’t cause any problems.

Overall we enjoyed our stay and will be returning to Champoluc again.

As has been said, the Hotel California is a bit quirky but it is very comfortable and great for a short skiing break. Very friendly staff – we discovered that using our limited French was the best way to communicate with the owner, who is fluent in French. We quite liked the walk to the ski lift in the morning as a good way to loosen up. And the hand towels may be a bit thin but the bath towels are just fine!

we really enjoyed our time here, we were away from the immediate village yet near enough for a 10 min walk, the woods outside were lovely, we loved it. very clean & tidy, & the owners quite enjoyed our very broken English / Italian chats. we will certainly go back.

Lovely clean, well looked after hotel, we enjoyed our weeks stay & will return if we can. The music was very quirky when you go into your room, quiet location but perfect for a brisk walk to ski2 in the mornings.

A first for me, having had the pleasure of staying in a few different hotels in Champoluc, was an over night in the California. I suppose the words that come into my head are quirky and friendly. With a large bar area having a meal with a huge TV playing Queen live at Wembley in the background was a little surreal as was opening the bedroom door and music from a western playing. Despite the paper thin towels the staff could not be more helpful and the woodland trail behind the hotel is a delight

2/2014- this is the second time we have stayed at The California and again we found the staff very friendly and helpful. Whilst the accommodation is a little quirky and the hotel a 10 minute walk out of the village the room rates offer good value and I suspect we will come back again soon…

Hotel is fine as a base; practical, clean and a nice location (although out of the village it is in reality no further than hotels at the other end of the village – and the Ski2 pick-up works very well). We always like eating out in Champoluc (Le Sapin, Churin (Pizzeria), Le Petit Coq, etc) which is good as I don’t think we’d want to spend much time in the hotel. Despite a big bar there seems little atmosphere and the musical bedrooms are a bit unusual! Nothing wrong with it though – just enjoy it for B&B.

Stayed again at the Hotel California for a second year. Hotel service is great with very helpful staff – although as mentioned English is not their first language so be prepared! It is a little walk from the centre but it can be a nice walk through a lit small forest path. As mentioned is what you would expect of a 3* B&B.

I really like the Hotel California. It is a little quirky but that is no bad thing. Rooms are warm and clean, service is friendly and efficient and food both breakfast and dinner are very pleasant and good value. Overall it is everything you expect from a 3* hotel. One even better if would be the quality of the towels – they are a little thin and could do with being thicker and softer. I have stayed twice and will be staying again in a couple of weeks.

Stayed at the Hotel California with my son in February 2013. Hotel was very quaint with lots of character (rooms are named after musical figures). Rooms were comfortable. Staff were very helpful, although their English is not the strongest – was always able to get my message across though!
Was about a 10 minute walk from the centre and ski lifts – although a pleasant woodland trail kept you away from the road.
Some comments did describe it as lively and loud at times – we experienced none of this – although we were the week before the main half term.

We had a very nice stay at the Hotel California. It is not luxury, but more than adequate. It has spacious, and eccentric!, rooms which were pleasant and quiet although slightly dated. We enjoyed our daily walk through the woods to the gondola and main village. In the evenings, Ski 2 ferried us about in their mini-bus which was particularly useful after dinner when the children were tired. I particularly liked having the option of B & B, so we ate out at a different restaurant every night. Le Petit Coq next door was particularly good, and also La Grange up the valley at Frachey.

  15. Robert and Janet Ward on 10th April 2013

We had a comfortable stay at the Hotel California in February 2013 and enjoyed the walk across the park to the lift each morning. The hotel staff were most obliging and helpful although the bar and restaurant are a bit large and impersonal. We ate out most evenings as the hotel ran a number of ‘karaoke discos’ for outside school groups during half-term.
