Family Friendly

For those with children Hotel Castor is a delight. Herman and Beatrice have three young children of their own, so families are well catered for, as well as individuals and groups. There is a playroom below the bar and a garden with plenty of equipment. Parents often savour the chance to keep an eye on the kids from a sunny terrace, enjoying a beer or crisp glass of wine.

The Rooms

Bedrooms are furnished in a traditional alpine style with wooden furniture. All rooms have en-suite bathroom, many with baths. Some have balconies with pleasant views across the square and down the Ayas Valley. Two rooms (which have recently been renovated) interconnect with each other, perfect for those travelling with young children.

The hotel has a large, bright dining room where a good and varied menu (with choices at most courses) is served. The menu includes a selection of homemade desserts. An extensive wine list includes both local wines and wines from around the world.

The bar at the hotel (open to non-residents) is one of the most popular in the village and Hotel Castor ‘music nights’ are legendary!

    Our first stay at Castor.
12 of us for 4 nights.
Very friendly ,great food and relaxing bar except on Tuesday night when we sang our hearts out. Great fun.
We tried the wine tasting too which was interesting and educational.
The rooms are spotless and service top notch.
I asked my group for any improvements they could suggest and not one could think of any.
Think we will be an even bigger group next year.

We stayed at Hotel Castor during the first week of April and had a wonderful time. The weather was unseasonably warm at first so we had virtually a summer holiday with no snow (plenty on the slopes though), then it snowed so we got to experience the Hotel and the village covered in white. We really loved the relaxed feel of the hotel and the fact that we could feed the kids early and then slip down for a meal just the two of us. The dining room and bar/lounge area were very comfortable and had we not been so tired that we were asleep by 10 every night we would have much more use of these and the music night that we’d heard do much about! I did manage to go to the wine tasting which was very informative and offered delicious wines. Herman and his staff are most accommodating and we had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay. We do hope to be back.

We have recently returned from a week at Hotel Castor with Ski2. I have only good things to say about Ski2 themselves – we have travelled with them to Champoluc twice now and both times have found the service both in the UK and resort to be second to none.

We had a family room at Hotel Castor which was kept very clean and had everything our family of 4 needed for the week. The hotel is in a great location in the middle of the village and has a great lounge/bar area which we enjoyed relaxing in after a day in the snow. Breakfast was generous and tasty, with extra cooked options such as poached eggs, pancakes and omelettes available to order from the waiting staff. The waiting and bar staff were really friendly and helpful but service at dinner was often slow, perhaps due to the hotel being particularly full over the Easter period. One or two more team members would have helped.

Our friends had stayed in the hotel in 2017 and recommended it particularly as it had served a good kids meal in the early evening, with time to get younger children settled before the adult dinner. This year the hotel were less keen to do an early sitting for children but when pushed agreed to serve food half an hour before the adult sitting. Each evening we felt that the children were rushed and we then had no time to settle them before eating our own meal. This made the evenings fairly tricky to manage. The evening meals were mostly ok, with the salad bar being particularly good, but the wine list is great! In the end we chose to eat out on three of our seven nights.

Overall we had another lovely week in Champoluc and we are coming back next year but have chosen a different hotel.

Lovely hotel with charm and character in an ideal location within easy walking distance of the main ski lifts. Fabulous food, friendly staff and a lovely bar/lounge area to relax in. I would certainly recommend this hotel and if you haven’t been to Champoluc with Ski 2 just book it up. You will have absolutely no regrets!! It’s an amazing holidays and the team can’t do enough for you.
Thank you Ski 2 once again!! See you in 12 months…

We have been to Champoluc a number of times and stayed in a number of the hotels including the Breithorn and the Relais. Whilst we have enjoyed all of our stays, we genuinely can not speak highly enough of the Castor. It is incredibly child friendly (with a play area in the basement), and very relaxed which means that you find yourself inclined to do exactly the same. Herman is a great guy, and his advice on Piemonte reds is already missed as his entire collection which will keep you busy for many years to come! The hotel is walking distance from the centre, and has a park outside which is brilliant in early Spring. The food is very good, and in particular the breakfasts. The entire team are super friendly, and nothing feels too much trouble. In summary you feel at home, even though you’re away from home.. we can’t wait to go back and have already booked the hotel for next Easter. Brilliant!

: four course very night for dinner, brilliant breakfast spread with home made cakes etc. We stayed over new Year and enjoyed the special meal – six courses, champagne, all the trimmings. Everything home made and delicious. Champoluc is a lovely village too

We loved our stay at the Hotel Castor pre-Christmas 2016. Food was great, staff helpful and a good central location in walking distance of lifts. Herman went the extra mile in personally driving my husband and son to the doctors when he developed an ear infection and Herman’s music night was great fun. Loved the dogs too!

Stayed at the Castor the week before christmas 2016. We had room 202 which was recently refurbished – it was spacious, with nice modern bathroom. It was a comfortable room for family of 4.
The food was nice and the children enjoyed the different pasta meals.Good choice of wines.
Service was very friendly and warm.
Location was within walking distance of the ski lift.
Second trip with Ski2 and would highly recommend them.

Great choice for those with children. Very relaxed and friendly. Bar area is a great place to chill out on an evening. Staff could not be more helpful at meal times. Owner was very knowledgable on the wine front and took time each evening helping us to choose a nice bottle of wine. Good location with a short walk to slopes. Very quiet up on the fourth floor. Our room was fine for the three of us and a bath was a nice surprise. Great choice for us with a young family and will be back.

We had a happy week at The Hotel Castor and would stay there again.
The breakfast buffet is plentiful and very varied, there’s definitely something for everyone and enough to keep you going well beyond lunchtime. The children’s tea at 6pm was a salad bar, followed by pasta course followed by meat and veg course with fruit, ice cream or cake to finish. Our children were happy with this but the owners said they could join us for the full adult dinner later if they preferred, at the same price. Children’s tea was a little rushed though, because the staff eat at 6.30.
Adults dinner was great with the same courses available as the kids but with more choice on the menu. I enjoyed all the food during the week and the service was extremely friendly and helpful, but I was told the fish wasn’t the best option by others in our party. There is an extensive local wine list.

The bar was comfortable and relaxed with the children’s playroom just off it. The playroom was a bit tired but it was end of season when we went and our children didn’t seem to mind, they liked having a place to get together with the other small guest in the hotel. There is also a tv with kids cartoons usually playing in another area of the bar. There are few swings in the garden and a park across the road. The hotel dogs were popular with the kids and very tolerant!
The reception staff spoke fluent English and couldn’t be more helpful. They were great. The waiters and waitresses were lovely to the adults and children too.
It is a bit of a walk to the boot room but nothing too taxing. Most days we asked the receptionist to call ski2 for a lift which generally arrived in less then ten minutes, saving our legs for skiing.
The bedrooms and bathrooms we had were fine, it’s an old building so they vary in size and style. The beds are generally very firm. Some were (fairly substantial) fold-up beds which are better suited to children. It might be worth checking before you arrive if you have a bad back. There was plenty of hot water and the temperature in the rooms can be controlled individually.
I would visit again in summer or winter.

In these days of apartments and modern block hotels it is reassuring to know that the Hotel Castor still nestles into a bend in the main street of Champoluc, a quiet spot near to the old traditional centre but only a short walk from the main ski activity. Family owned and family run, the Castor offers a warm welcome to guests, a relaxed atmosphere, appetising menus, a comfortable sitting room and bar, friendly and unobtrusive service. It is a place to return to year after year, a place to remind one of the old days of skiing, of wooden skis and cable bindings, of tradition and history.

  21. Bruce Bladon on 12th April 2015

The Castor is well placed, just off the main village square. This is nearly a km walk from the base of the lift. Its a pleasant walk in your trainers with your skis and boots in storage at the base of the lift, but on the first morning with full ski kit, use the courtesy lift from Ski 2. There are a couple of bars and shops in the neighbourhood of the hotel, and you will pass a few on the way back from the lift. The hotel is lovely. There is extensive wood panelling in the dining room and bar. Our room was a triple, which was quite comfortable for three. It was easy to walk around the room, there was space to unpack, and a reasonable sized bathroom with a hot shower over a bath. The lift is small but as we were on the second floor we only used it with luggage. Breakfast is a generous buffet. There is bacon and egg, a (slightly slow) toaster, yoghurts, ham, cheeses, etc. There is a fascinating automated fresh orange juice machine. Dinner is chosen the night before, from three options. The format is the same each night, of a generous salad buffet, followed by a pasta course, followed by a main course. In the unlikely event you are still hungry there is a sweet option, which doesn’t change. There is a good selection of wine, particularly red.
The Castor is a very nice 3* hotel. It might lack some of the grandeur of 4* hotels but makes up for it with character, with friendly service, and comfortable rooms. The corridors are a bit narrow, the bar might be slightly “family friendly” if you were wanting an adult night (i.e. has children in it), but it has characterful wood panelled rooms, friendly service and nice food. The wifi I am afraid was utter rubbish, but we have experienced the same in other hotels in Champoluc, so it may be more to do with bandwidth from the valley. There is a good 4G signal, so sign up for a data package before departure.

We have stayed at a few of the hotels in Champoluc now and The Castor is the one we have decided to go back to next year. It is exactly as Ski 2 describe – good for families. The rooms are big enough for 4, comfortable beds and lots of drawers and hanging space. The food is good with plenty of choice to suit everyone, and with a great wine selection for the grown ups! The bar area is lovely, really warm and welcoming – with the added bonus of free tea and homemade biscuits after skiing. Herman is charming and even hosts a music night in the bar!

With my family I have been visiting Champoluc since 1995 and have stayed at the Castor on a number of occasions. Herman and all the staff are always very welcoming and helpful. There is a wonderful and wide selection of dishes for the evening meal which should satisfy all tastes and the breakfasts go on and on. Rooms are well appointed and lovely and warm with lots of piping hot water, whilst the public rooms are comfortable with the bar at hand. An altogether pleasing experience.
