Hotel La Rouja

A delightful boutique hotel in a great position in the centre of the resort.

Hotel features:

The Hotel La Rouja is one of the most popular hotels in Champoluc. Its modern, bright interior and beautiful furnishings make it a great choice for anyone looking for a stylish hotel that’s comfortable and welcoming but not too big.

Hotel La Rouja, Champoluc

Situated in the centre of Champoluc village, just across the river from the Hotel Castor, Hotel La Rouja has wonderful views up and down the valley with many of the 23 bedrooms overlooking the mountains.

All the rooms have an en-suite bathroom and most of the original bedrooms have a hydro-massage shower which is great for sore muscles after a hard day of skiing. Some rooms also have a small sauna facility built in to the shower cubicle.

The hotel has recently added another some more new rooms which are perfect for families.

Standard rooms – the original rooms in the hotel sleeping 2, 3 or 4 people

Superior rooms – family rooms sleeping 2, 3 or 4 people. Some of these rooms have a low partition to give some privacy between the beds, but they are all a single open-plan room

Suites – family rooms sleeping 2, 3, 4 or 5 people. Some of these rooms have a low partition to give some privacy between the beds, but they are all a single open-plan room

The public areas are cosy and inviting with warm red hues and plenty of comfy leather chairs to relax in and enjoy the wood burning stove. The food at Hotel La Rouja is always highly recommended, with an emphasis on traditional and local food – plenty of meats, cheeses and a great choice of wines.

This was our second visit to La Rouja and we really like it as it is a lovely rustic hotel. We had a spacious family room on the top floor with a bath and shower. The shower cubicle is a little on the small side and the lighting in the room isn’t that great however the room is very clean and nicely furnished and beds are extremely comfortable which is so important on a skiing holiday! The breakfasts are amazing and there is anything that you could possibly want. Dinners are gourmet-esque and four course but to be honest this is too much, more basic heartier meals with less courses would be better. The bar area is delightful with a log fire and free bar snacks. All of the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. We are booking again for next year!

We had a lovely week in Hotel La Rouja. This was our third time in Champoluc with Ski2 and it’s the first hotel that we plan to revisit. Our rooms (interconnecting doubles on the 1st floor) were not large but were well appointed, clean and very nicely furnished.

Communal areas are large and welcoming and we all enjoyed the pre-dinner nibbles. The staff were great, and food was generally good. Fantastic pasta and mostly good main meals. We loved the tiramisu!

  3. Karen Bindi on 27th March 2019

Great location and friendly staff. Rooms very clean. We enjoyed evening drinks in the basement bar, with complimentary nibbles. The decor was tasteful and the hotel had a welcoming feel.
Our room was on the top floor which was an advantage as the wooden structure of the hotel meant sound insulation wasn’t great.
Evening meals were mixed.. perhaps would be more successful to stick to more traditional simple Italian cooking and do it well, rather than try to be ‘gourmet’
All in all a lovely hotel and we would return.

We enjoyed our stay at La Rouja very much indeed – was our first time there. Staff all pleasant and helpful. Decor and ambience very pleasing. The Hotel occupies a good position in the village.
Our room on the 1st floor was quite luxurious with a four poster bed, but somewhat cramped. The bar and lounge was excellent for relaxation and pre dinner drinks.
Choice for breakfast was excellent. Evening meals were good but slightly variable.
All in all we had a great time.

Brilliant hotel – fantastic for the family and the source of so many happy memories. The standout feature is the staff – special mention to Helena & Alen who were at all times attentive & professional yet also patient, forgiving and most importantly very funny and good humoured.

    We love this place!

ps The secret to the the boiled egg machine is to leave the eggs in after the water is on full boiling mode for 4 minutes 45 seconds.

We returned for a second year to this delightful and charming rustic hotel which is well located, being only a 5-10 min walk to the Ski 2 office and lifts. The reception area has been redeveloped and enlarged since last year which has made for an excellent improvement. The dining area has also benefitted from this redevelopment. The beds in our inter-connecting rooms (one double, the other twin beds) are very comfortable as well. We thoroughly enjoy the basement bar and sitting room and the restaurant is lovely, catering really well for children including our coeliac daughter. Very friendly and helpful staff too. We love this hotel and are already booked in for a third year in 2019.

We had a fab stay here and have booked to come back. Comfy beds, the room worked well with 2 girls of 9 and 12 (beds in the alcoves). Big bathroom. Most of the staff were great, particularly Elena who went out of her way to help, though too few staff too often especially on change over days. Food was good but a bit too much sauce and a little repetitive and breakfasts were not as good as we had elsewhere in Champoluc previously. I would have loved it to be warmer and cosier – it was in our room but not in the bar downstairs nor restaurant. Some small things but overall great.

Lovely place to stay. Excellent friendly staff and great location. Breakfast and dinner are great. The staff do everything possible to ensure your stay lives up to expectations. Our son is a fussy eater and the chef made sure he had something to eat each night and made our stay more enjoyable. Helena the waitress was lovely. Room was 202 and although fairly small was clean and comfy.

Hotel La Rouja is a lovely traditional hotel. We had a family room with bunk beds for our children which was great. All the facilities in the room were good with a large bathroom. The hotel has a fantastic bar in the basement which is perfect for afternoon tea or early evening drinks. During our half term break the children gathered here after skiing to play games together which was great. The hotel staff are very accommodating although they could do with a few more staff members at mealtimes as it was sometimes tricky to get service. The breakfast buffet is a good spread with everything you could want, and lots of options for children and adults alike. It was not advertised to us that you could also order hot breakfasts such as omelette which would have been nice on the first morning as we may have used this a bit more. The dinners were a little inconsistent I’m afraid. The week started well and the first two nights we had delicious meals but then there were a couple of nights that were not as good. They offer an early sitting for children which is great, but they also offer children’s options during the main dinner service as well (Pasta with pesto, ragu or carbonara were the faves). Overall we enjoyed our stay at the hotel and would come back again.

  12. ODonnell Family on 19th February 2018

Our first time with Ski2 and staying at La Rouja hotel, the staff are wonderful and always happy to help despite it being “demanding” half term – kids, parents all wanting everything – now ! Location, Location Location, close to everything you need so no need to wait for a bus to collect you and if you fancy popping out for dinner one night its all within easy reach – all though an army of Ski 2 staff will come and get you. Hotel food was excellent – they have kids tea and later dinner for grown ups if your children are too tired. Loved the hotel decor – Alpine and interesting for little ones – down stairs bar a lovely snug with fire so you can catch up with other guests at the end of the day. Would definitely stay again no hesitations. Thanks to all the La Rouja staff.

This is the first time we have stayed at this hotel and we were wonderfully looked after in every way. The staff were very attentive, kind, helpful and considerate. The rooms were cosy and clean and the overall Alpine charm of the hotel was delightful. The food was outstanding every day. Our children ate with us and tried a huge range of tasty local dishes. It really added to the family holiday experience as we loved immersing ourselves in the local dishes that were patiently described and translated by the staff. We look forward to coming back again.

We have stayed at La Rouja for each of the last 3 years and He experience every time has been fantastic. We could not recommend the hotel highly enough. First and foremost the staff are brilliant – great service, attentive and good humour – we were so well looked after by Eleanor, Alessio and Valentin. The location is great, the rooms are perfect for families and the food and wine is very good and reasonably priced. Have already booked to return for 2018. A gem of a place to stay.

What a lovely hotel with the friendliest of staff who would go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
The rooms have everything you need including steam showers which are great when you’ve just come off the slopes.
The food isn’t 5* but there is plenty of it and the staff will ensure there is something for everyone taste.
    Highly recommend this hotel ?

  19. Emma Sumner on 18th April 2017

This is a really lovely, special hotel. It is attractively small in size which is appealing for families. The rooms are beautifully decorated (in the style of the rest of the hotel) with wooden panelling and fur throws. The dining room is charming, with delicious, extensive meals. They, in themselves, are not outstanding, but at least as good as any other in the area, from speaking with guests in other hotels. The basement sitting room area is a really attractive feature of the hotel; both intimate and smart; the perfect place for a pre-dinner digestif whilst the children play a board game. The staff are genuinely charming. The location appears to be as central as many. Highly recommended.

First time at La Rouja but hopefully not the last. The location is ideal being only a short walk from the lift that takes you up the slopes. The food in the main was very good and certainly the best we have experienced in three trips to Champoluc. Bedrooms are excellent although some are much bigger than others. The downstairs bar/lounge is the best part of the hotel with the see through log fire and comfortable sofas and chairs. The staff were friendly and keen to please. All in all a great base for a ski week in Champoluc.

Very good hotel – the rooms are decorated beautifully, as is the whole place really! Beds are incredibly comfortable, bathrooms FANTASTIC.
Dinner is great, some of the dishes are exceptional.
Breakfast – a little overloaded with cake 🙂 but still a good range.
Staff are welcoming and accommodating, location can’t be faulted. Beautiful.

  23. Elaine Jackson on 8th March 2017

Second time in Champoluc and first time at La Rouja. Lovely, rustic alpine hotel with very comfortable beds, quality linen and our shower had a sauna which was perfect for easing the tired limbs. The rooms have rustic charm, slightly compact (the double rooms) but good storage and very relaxing. We were drawn to the smaller, very friendly nature of the hotel with the warm, cosy lounge in the basement where the barman made the best ‘apferol spritz’ we have had. Easy access to the lifts. The food was good although some meals rather strange hence the loss of one star. Having said that, we would definitely stay again based on the overall warmth and alpine charm.

Just back from a fabulously relaxing week with good snow and a great hotel.
Hotel La Rouja had all that we needed. It is relatively small but big on character. The rooms are very comfortable and the restaurant is excellent with food that impressed the chef in our party and a varied and reasonable wine list.
Already working out when we can go again!

Excellent hotel with a less than 10 minute walk to the lift.
Superior room was large and spacious for two with a comfortable bed and lots of storage.

Dinner was excellent with interesting dishes.

The superior rooms are very spacious and ideal for a family of four. Very quiet and cosy chalet style rooms but modern at the same time. Cleanliness was excellent. The bar/lounge area in the basement was lovely for a drink before or after dinner, cosying up to a nice roaring fire.

We’ll run hotel, nice staff and small enough to make your stay feel special.

    Great location.

The only negative was the variation and quality of food provided. It was certainly adequate but our entire party felt that it definitely could have been stepped up a notch. No vegetarian option available on some evenings.

    Would stay again.

Another year staying at Hotel La Rouja and never disappointed! The hotel has such charm and the staff friendly and helpful.

Great food and varied wine list with a cosy lounge to relax in front of the fire, following a fabulous feast!

La Rouja is a lovely hotel, with great central position. The staff are very friendly & the food superb. The only criticism would be that the bar area is fairly dark & small with limited scope to mix socially or for children to mix on their own.

This is a lovely comfortable hotel within easy walking distance of the ski deposit. The beds are really comfortable and the staff are very helpful.

We like boutique hotels as they are more personal.

The food is good but we would prefer 3 larger courses rather than 4 although the self service anti pasta to start with was absolutely lovely and you could always top up with tasty grilled or roasted vegetables if need be.

We’ve had the pleasure of staying at La Rouja many times and we have never been disappointed. It is wonderfully situated next to the river and is a short walk from the Ski2 ski depository. La Rouja offers a fantastic family atmosphere, there is a wide ranging choice of food for breakfast and dinner, with a wine list that offers superb variety. The rooms are a charming mix of alpine style and modern comfort, and ours was perfect for our family. Service was excellent as always, with the staff being friendly and very helpful. We enjoying staying at this small boutique hotel. The room was lovely with comfortable beds and supplied everything you required. All the staff were very helpful and the food was really nice…. a good breakfast with so much choice and so many courses for dinner, starter, pasta course, main course and pudding. Located in a quiet position on the river and a short walk to the ski deposit. We much prefer the informality of smaller hotels so would book it again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. We had a family room for ourselves and our two children which was perfect and extremely nicely done. The staff were extremely nice and helpful and were accommodating of the children. The food was delicious, lovely buffet style breakfasts and fantastic four course evening meals. A separate meal was provided for the children if you wanted them to eat earlier which we took advantage of. Lovely bar area downstairs where children could play board games and parents could sit, relax and have pre or post dinner drink. We had a wonderful week and will definitely be returning next year.

  36. Ralph Buchholz on 26th March 2015

We stayed in this hotel for a week in March 2015 and had the most relaxing and pampered week in the alps in years. The room we had was of a very high standard and with 2 small children (8 & 9), we had plenty of space as they had their own little area off the main bedroom. The food was incredible, whilst the staff were friendly, made you feel very comfortable and were brilliant with the kids. The bar area, although being partly in the cellar with no view of anything in particular, had a nice atmosphere, especially with the fire lit. The only thing missing was a sauna or Jacuzzi/leisure facility, but this was not really missed that much, given the other benefits.

  37. Helen Russell-Smith on 25th February 2015

We stayed at this wonderful hotel in February 2015 for a week, with our toddler and baby. We thought the hotel was absolutely fabulous. The staff were very helpful and accommodating (we could choose what our children had for their early supper each night for example). Our room was ideal for a family of 4, even with travel cots there was lots of space and it had a very modern and characterful bathroom. The dinner was lovely (5 courses…) but did become a little formulaic after a few days. The location of the hotel is great, a 5 – 10 minute walk to the ski deposit and a 10 – 15 minute walk (along the river) to the Penguin Club. The hotel is delightful inside, very tasteful and like a luxury chalet. We used a babysitter in the evenings and there is a landing on each floor where the babysitter can sit which worked very well. I have to say that the hotel’s website doesn’t do it justice in terms of the photos they have on there. We would love to return to this hotel next year!!

Really impressive hotel. The staff couldn’t have been friendlier or more helpful and there’s a real family feel to the place. Food might not be quite 5* but it’s good enough and they cater really well for the kids, organising an early supper for them if required. Only slight criticism would be that some of the rooms don’t have baths in them and you always need a good bath after a day on the slopes but it’s a small point and, if you book early enough, as we have done for next year, then you can book a room with a bath. All-in-all, a most enjoyable environment and we would give it 4.5 stars if we could…..

We spent a week at La Rouja in late March 2014, being our 3rd visit in 2 years. This has been 2 seperate family trips for a week each, and a 3 night long weekend. On each occasion, the expereince has been superb. The feeling is much more of a large, luxury chalet than a hotel. The rooms are superbly appointed, with a real Alpine feel and quality bed linen. Bathrooms always immaculate, with plenty of fresh towels and toiletries.

The highlights for us are two fold – the amazing service and fantastic food and wine. Vittoria, Mauro and Eleanor really take care of you from the moment you arrive, overseen by the fantastic host family who make you feel absolutely welcome. Nothing is too much trouble, and the quality and range of dinner is superb. Vittorio is passionate about his wine, and was always on hand to receomend a suitable wine, using his local knowledge.

The hotel is also able to lay on an early supper for the chuildren if you wish, so you have the choice of them eating around 6.30pm, or they can join you for a family supper an hour or so later.

Overall, a supoerb hotel, which is highly recomended.

  41. Tom Evans on 17th April 2014

I have just returned from a truly fab weekend in Champoluc staying at Hotel la Rouja. Having stayed here before I knew it was good but it is even better than I remembered.

The hotel is family run and the service is exceptional, down to every detail. The rooms are comfortable and everything is very clean.

The food was very good with varied menus and cooked to a very high standard, if only I could master the egg machine!!

The whole trip was fantastic from start to finish. The ski-2 team are always a pleasure to deal with and look after your every need and the hotel supports their service perfectly.

I am just about to book the same hotel for next year and counting down the days!!

  42. Chris & Alison Jones on 7th April 2014

My wife and I have been to Champoluc with Ski2 in the past (2014 was my third visit) and by coincidence have stayed at the hotel next door (not at present on Ski 2’s books!). We were looking forward to trying La Rouja and we were not disappointed! The hotel oozes Italian Alpine charm and is comfortable, quiet and well appointed. We were greeted at 01.30 on our first night by Vittore the manager who was charming and helpful (especially considering the late hour!). Nothing was too much trouble and he helped us with our bags and gave us a comprehensive tour of our room!

The bed was comfortable and the bathroom superb. The shower was one of the nicest I have used (albeit requiring a degree in rocket science to work it!). There was plenty of storage space in the bedroom.

The dinners were stunning. Five courses certainly filled me up and the quality was great! The wine list was brilliant and varied in both quality and price. Certainly something for everybody. The bar area in the basement was exceptional. Large, cosy, log fire and we were provided with canopes with our drinks.

Breakfasts were continental style. There was a hot buffet option (sausage, continental bacon & scrambled egg) but this was all a bit tired. However, everything else was fresh & delightful

The staff were smart and friendly. The manager Vittore could not have been more helpful and spoke brilliant English. Other staff were equally helpful but spoke minimal English.

I would highly recommend this hotel and we will certainly be returning in future.

Just back from four nights in delightful Champoluc at the charming Hotel Rouja, conveniently locate in the village and over a bridge by a pretty rushing river. We have tended to avoid half board in the past as we thought it might be a bit restrictive but the food at La Rouja was really excellent, both the huge breakfast (tons of choice and all very good quality) and the delicious four-course dinner (with choice in three out of four courses) where we especially liked the Aostan specialities. Super helpful staff for whom nothing is too much bother, but the stand-out for us was the lovely front-of-house/maitre d’/sommelier/site manager Vittorio who really can’t do enough to help you and always looks immaculate too. Our balconied room was charmingly appointed with a lovely view, all very rustic in decor. The shower mentioned by another reviewer was a bit daunting and looked as if it might go into orbit – as two middle-aged technophobes we struggled to get it even to work for just a regular shower. The lighting in the bathroom could also do to be quite a bit brighter as it wasn’t great for putting on make-up/shaving and the mirror a bit far away. But these are minor niggles in an overall lovely experience including a super comfy bed in which to relax those aching muscles. Thoroughly recommended and would go again.

My 4th visit to Champoluc and the best hotel so far.
A lovely hotel – very rustic with Alpine decor, nice rooms with good quality bed linen and very clean.
Charming light restaurant with excellent Italian food.
The service was fantastic- everyone friendly and helpful.
2 critical points- the ” state of the art” showers with water jets, radio etc were unnecessary and smelled a bit moldy as totally enclosed. The basement lounge/ bar area was dark at night and it was difficult to read there- could easily be made more pleasant by adding a few lamps. Perhaps the TV could be moved into a corner area at the far end.
Despite these comments I would certainly return there.

We have just spent a wonderful week at Hotel La Rouja. Our adjoining rooms were brilliant for a family, with plenty of space and lovely bathrooms.
The staff couldn’t have been more friendly, attentive and helpful.
The Italian food and wine were varied and delicious. And the staff were very happy to feed our children slightly earlier.

Conveniently and centrally situated, the Hotel La Rouja, sits at the side of the river in Champoluc, offering easy access to both the village and the main gondola.
I stayed there in mid March 2013 and on a half-board basis in room 303. On first sight the hotel oozes alpine charm and character, and this continues to be the case once inside. Room 303 is at the very top of the hotel and is accessed by its own staircase and balcony, very penthouse style. The room was spacious, despite the lack of headroom at its extremities, with a very comfortable double bed. The en-suite bathroom was roomy and fitted with a full size Bath, which due to headroom was only fitted with a handheld shower. There is complimentary wireless high-speed Internet access in the room and throughout the hotel. The room also has Sky / cable equipped TV, a spacious fridge/minibar, and an easy to use safe.
The restaurant is traditional in style, with both buffet style and cooked breakfasts. Evening dining cannot be faulted offering a varied 4 course menu to a high standard, and which the same applies to the wine list.
The hotel also offers a great bar area on the ground floor, which is comfortable, quiet and relaxed, with open log fires and leather armchairs.
The staff are very friendly, speaking both Italian and English, knowledgeable and with an attention to detail that was second to none, and overall I would highly recommend this hotel to all (but not too much because I want it for myself! ).

    We love this hotel!
The charm of a mountain chalet combined with the service of a quality hotel make it our favourite in Champolouc. Beautifully appointed rooms, wonderful italian food and central location make it impossible to beat. Nothing is too much trouble for the fabulous loyal staff, even the children’s requests . . . . . The planned hot tub will give it everything a discerning skier could wish for. Go see and enjoy for yourself.

A terrific hotel in a great central location which was close to the gondala. Oustanding food with a very relaxed atmosphere in the dining room. Our room was of an exceptionally high standard with lovely views of the local mountains. We loved having our evening drink in bar/lounge with a welcoming fire. Excellent wine cellar that was remarkabley good value. As for the staff, fantastic – they could never do enough for you. We will defintely return!

Our stay here was great. It is a lovely friendly and conveniently situated hotel. We all liked the food, which was a very high standard. The rooms, though not very large, we’re really nice, with good facilities and good views. The bar was friendly with a nice fire. Would definitely go again.

La Rouja is quite simply the best hotel we have ever stayed in on a skiing holiday. All the staff from the manager to waiters/waitress`s are extremely attentive and friendly. The rooms are very comfortable with superb views. We are all good cooks in our family with one professional cook and the food we found not only plentiful but also of great quality and reflecting the very best of Italian national and local cuisine. We loved the beautiful alpine decour which truely set thescene. We would certainly stay again!

Enjoyed a wonderful short stay in La Rouja as an introduction to Italian skiing and was delighted to be staying there. The staff were very welcoming and the hotel exceeded expectations – The food and wine reinforced any stereotype of italian cooking, both excellent ! Its set a high standard for any other venue to be measured against. Would happily recommend it to anyone wanting to go there.

We have enjoyed two excellent stays in this first class hotel. The owners and the very friendly, pleasant staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome and at home. The rooms are well appointed and very comfortable, but for us the outstanding part of our stay was the food: Buffet breakfast sets you up well for the day; evening meal is to die for. In our very many years of skiing this is our favourite place to stay.

The staff were really welcoming and friendly . They went out of their way to get soya milk for our son. Good restaurant . Particularly excellent choice at breakfast too. Comfortable beds and bedrooms tastefully decorated. Close to lifts. Would definitely return .
