Although flying or driving are the main travel choices for our guests, we have recently seen an increase in enquiries on how to travel by train to Champoluc.
Often the main reason for travelling by train is to cut the carbon footprint of your ski holiday. Campaign groups such as Protect Our Winters and Ski Flight Free have shown that travelling by train from the UK to the Alps can reduce the environmental footprint of your journey by up to 85%.

How do I travel from London to Champoluc by train?
All journeys from the UK to Champoluc start at London St Pancras with a Eurostar train direct to Paris.
In winter, there are around 15 scheduled Eurostar departures from London to Paris each day. The journey time is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes, although this vary depending whether your service stops in Ebbsfleet, Kent (where it is also possible to start your journey).
On arrival in Paris, it’s a simple task to transfer from Gare du Nord, where Eurostar arrives to Gare du Lyon, for your TGV (Train Grande Vitesse) to Turin. See below for more information on changing stations.
What is the nearest station to Champoluc?
The nearest station to Champoluc is Verres in the Aosta valley.
However, if you are travelling by train, we are very happy to collect you in one of our private minibuses directly from the station in Turin, to save you having to connect on to Aosta and then Verres.
We can also collect you from Milan Centrale, although trains from Paris to Milan (connecting on from your Eurostar) take significantly longer than to Turin.
Milan is probably only the better option if you are travelling from other towns in Italy such as Genoa or Venice or from eastern Europe.
Alternatively, there is an overnight sleeper service that leaves Paris in the evening arriving into Milan Centrale early the following morning. You can find out more about this service on the Man in Seat 61 website.
How do I travel from Paris to Champoluc?
You will have to check the timetable for exact times on your date of travel, but currently the best option is to take the 14:42 (2.42pm) train from Gare de Lyon direct all the way to Turin Porta Susa.
This direct train takes just 5 hours and 36 minutes and will see you arrive in Turin at 20:18 (8.18pm local time, 7.18pm UK time).
What time will I need to leave London St Pancras?
To connect to the 14:42 train, a morning Eurostar departure will get you to Paris with time to cross the city to Gare de Lyon. See the section below for advice on transferring from Gare du Nord.
Staying overnight in Paris
Alternatively, you could take an afternoon Eurostar to Paris, stop overnight and then travel on to Turin the following day, arriving at lunchtime.
Long-time lover of train travel Naomi Drewett chooses to stop overnight at the Novotel Gare de Lyon (“It’s not the most exciting, but it is right next door to the station and has rooms that sleep four”). She has also previous stayed at the Ibis Gare de Lyon.
I find travelling by train relaxing and a chance to see some of the country you’re travelling through. There are no luggage restrictions, lighter security checks and you can wander around as you please.Naomi Drewett, Ski2 guest
How do I book train travel to Champoluc?
It is possible to book a complete point-to-point journey on websites such as thetrainline.com or Rail Europe, including both the UK and continental legs of the journey, our recommendation is to book directly with Eurostar and SNCF.
Both websites are well-designed and easy to use. Your tickets can be collected digitally or, if you prefer, printed out.
An advantage of booking direct is that you can choose how long you want to give yourself to cross Paris. More experienced travellers might only need an hour to transfer between stations, but if it’s your first time, we recommend you allow at least 90 minutes.
How do I travel from Turin to Champoluc by train?
We are very happy to collect you from Turin on the evening of your arrival. However, if you want to break up your journey with a stop in Paris or Turin overnight, we will adjust to your arrival time.
It is possible to travel by train from Turin to Verres – the nearest station to Champoluc. You usually need to change at Ivrea and can book this direct on Trenitalia. However, it will be quicker to take our minibus transfer.
How long does it take to go from London to Turin by train?
If you chose to take the 9.22am Eurostar to Paris and 2.24pm train from Paris to Turin, the total journey time from London will be 9 hours 56 minutes.
More confident travellers could take the 10.24am Eurostar would cut that time down to 8 hours 54 minutes.
From Turin, it takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to transfer by minibus to Champoluc.
How do I get from Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon?
It can take as little as 15-20 minutes to cross Paris from the Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon if you use the Metro system.
The journey on the underground is only 9 minutes on the RER ‘D’ line. This video shows how you can go about it:
An alternative is to travel by taxi. It usually takes around 25 minutes and costs approximately €20. The Snow Carbon website has some excellent information on booking taxis in advance.
As we have noted above, if it’s your first time crossing Paris or you are carrying large amounts of luggage, it might be prudent to build in more time.
Does taking the train to Champoluc cost more than flying?
If you look purely at the cost of the train v. the cost of the flight, then flying is almost always cheaper. However, when you make your comparison calculation, make sure you consider the cost of travel to the airport and/or parking costs.
Do watch out for the chance to upgrade to First Class when you do your cost comparison. It’s often only €10-€20 more and well worth it for the extra space you get.
N.B. You don’t need to consider the cost of a transfer from the airport as all Ski 2 guests have a private transfer to resort included in the cost of your ski holiday.
Can I take the Eurostar direct to Champoluc?
No. The only Eurostar service direct to the Alps goes on weekends in winter to the Tarentaise valley.
